Luis "Louie" Alamia Jr. History

Luis Antonio Alamia Jr., fondly known as "Coach Alamia" or "Mr. Alamia," was a beloved figure in the Edinburg community. Born and raised in Edinburg, Texas, he dedicated his life to serving others, both as an educator and a leader. Luis Alamia Jr. graduated from Edinburg High School in 1961 where he was an outstanding athlete in baseball and earned All District and All State Honors. He also earned the title of "King Bobcat" his Senior Year. He then went on to attend New Mexico Highlands College and Pan American College. He was an outstanding athlete, earning the title of the "Prince of Thieves" for setting a national NAIA record for stolen bases in the 1960s. His athletic accomplishments were recognized with his induction into the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.

Alamia's career in education spanned 48 years, during which he served as a coach, teacher, and administrator. He was known for his dedication to youth sports, coaching and leading Edinburg High School to two district titles in the late 1960s. After his coaching days at Edinburg High School, he then went off to coach youth sports where many knew him as the coach for the "Blue Angels." Alamia also served as an Assistant Principal at Edinburg High School and Edinburg North High School, where he was affectionately known for handing out mints to students. 

In 2024, Mr. Alamia was selected as a City of Edinburg Hometown Hero in recognition of his selfless service. He continually put others before himself and showed true acts of kindness. 

Luis Antonio Alamia Jr. passed away on November 1, 2018, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, dedication, and love for his family and community. He is remembered by his wife Marcy Alamia, his children Luis Alamia and Amy Alamia Anzaldua, son in law Edgar Anzaldua, and his grandchildren Tristan and Abram Anzaldua, and Serenity Alamia. His contributions to education and community service continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps. Luis Alamia Jr.'s life story is a testament to the power of dedication and service. His memory lives on in the hearts of those he touched and the community he served.
