UIL Heat Safety - Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT)

🌡️🚨 2026-2027 UIL Heat Safety Update 🚨🌡️

Effective August 1, 2026, all practices and workouts must follow the new UIL heat safety protocols designed to help prevent Exertional Heat Stroke and provide a safer environment for students. 💧☀️

The use of Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) to monitor environmental conditions and guide activity modifications is mandatory.

Edinburg CISD Athletics and Marching Band have already had this in place since for several years when UIL provided this as simply a suggestion. It is now mandatory and we will continue to provide the most care for our athletes and musicians.

What is WBGT? 🤔

WBGT (Wet Bulb Globe Temperature) measures more than just the air temperature. It estimates heat stress by combining:

🌡️ Air Temperature

💧 Relative Humidity

💨 Wind Speed

☀️ Solar Radiation

These readings determine when modifications are required, including:

✅ Work-to-rest ratios

💦 Hydration breaks

🛡️ Equipment restrictions

⏱️ Practice length adjustments

🔑 Key Updates for 2026-2027

🧊 Rapid Cooling Zone Requirement – A designated rapid cooling zone is now mandatory.

⏰ WBGT Timing Clarification – WBGT readings must be taken within 15 minutes before the start of every practice to ensure accurate conditions.

📊 Consistent Monitoring – Environmental conditions must be monitored throughout outdoor activities, with practice modifications made as conditions change.
